Kodak LS85 Film Digitizer

Is it the original or the copy? Image quality from the KODAK INDUSTREX Film Digitizing System is that good. Whether you’re archiving film in space-saving digital form or converting old records to compare with new computed radiography (CR) images, the KODAK INDUSTREX Film Digitizing System can give you results remarkably close to the original.

The laser beam efficiently penetrates high optical densities for excellent image quality. The laser beam discretely illuminates each point on the film, with over 90% of the transmitted light collected and measured. As a result, the resolution and densities in the digital image are representative of the original image, allowing you to visualize subtle, low-contrast abnormalities. A patented logarithmic amplifier, unique to Kodak film digitizers, evenly distributes digital signals to an accuracy of 0.001 optical density. No other digitizer has this high degree of density accuracy.

Kodak’s highest resolution film digitizer is self-calibrating and unaffected by ambient light. This tabletop model requires almost no maintenance. Best of all, the Film Digitizing System delivers the performance and reliability that you expect from Kodak.

Examples

The Image Library contains a number of examples of film radiographs that have been digitised using the LS85. These images form The Pullen Collection, an number of radiographs of historical importance, marking the first radiography of operational gas turbines.

These film radiographs have been digitised at 254dpi (0.1mm per pixel) to provide 12-bit images. For the purposes of this website, the 12-bit images have been contrast stretched, before conversion to 24-bit colour (8-bit grey scale).

All the radiographs, with the exception of the two cold neutron radiographs are 14" x 17", which have a digitised size of approximately 3500 x 4200 pixels. The cold neutron radiographs are smaller (12" x 15.5") and have a digitised size of 3000 x 3900 pixels. All the radiographs are copies of the originals, which were exposed over 30 years ago.
